Extra protection for your assets

Your homeowners, renters or auto policy gives you liability protection, but only up to a certain amount. If you get sued or have a large claim against you, you might need more coverage to keep your assets safe. That's where umbrella insurance helps. It gives you extra protection, up to $3 million, so you can feel safe knowing your personal assets are not at risk.

Understanding umbrella insurance

An umbrella policy provides extra liability coverage above and beyond your home and auto insurance and protects you financially if you cause injury or damage to someone else's property.

Example:
A neighbor's child is playing with your kids and is attacked by your dog causing the child permanent scarring and disfigurement. Your neighbor sues you, resulting in a $800,000 verdict. You have homeowners liability limit of $300,000 and an umbrella policy of $1,000,000. Your home insurance company pays $300,000 minus your deductible, and the umbrella policy pays the remaining $700,000.

Without umbrella coverage, you would be responsible for the amount not covered by your homeowners policy putting your other assets at risk including your home and investments.

Examples of liabilities typically covered under umbrella insurance include

  1. Bodily injury:

A neighbor's child is attacked by your dog, and the settlement exceeds your homeowners or renters policy limits.

  2. Property damage:

Your child causes damage to a neighbor's property, and the compensation awarded exceeds your standard policy limits.

  3. Landlord liability:

A tenant or guest gets injured on your rental property, and their medical expenses and other damages exceed your landlord policy's limits.

  4. Personal liability coverage:

Expenses arise from a defamation lawsuit against you.

Common questions about personal liability insurance

  1. Umbrella insurance does not cover:

    • deliberate damage that you or a covered member of your household (Neither does your home or car insurance.)
    • liability incurred in business or professional activities
    • liability you agreed to under a contract you signed
    • liability from armed conflicts
  2. The cost of umbrella insurance depends on several factors:

    • Coverage amountThe more coverage you choose, the higher your premium.
    • Number of vehicles and homes: More vehicles or homes increase your premium.
    • Location: Your location impacts risk, risk impacts the cost of your policy.
    • Other risk factors: Things like owning a pool or trampoline, or having a teen driver in your household can increase your risk.
    • Underlying liability limits: You usually need to have certain minimum liability limits on other insurance policies.
  3. Umbrella insurance is not required coverage. A licensed insurance expert can help you if umbrella insurance makes sense for you, how much you need, and where to find the right coverage.

Here's a general rule of thumb for considering umbrella coverage:

You might want to consider umbrella insurance if the total value of your assets is higher than the limits of your auto or home insurance liability. Those assets should include your cash accounts, retirement, college savings and investment accounts, and your home equity.

  4. While umbrella insurance can be affordable, you'll need to put thought into the right amount. Consulting a local insurance agent is the best way to determine how much umbrella coverage you want.

In simple terms, consider the total value of your assets minus the limits of your home and car insurance policy to help you start thinking about how much coverage you want.

Good Counsel is Key - Our goal is to be helpful, but this information is never intended to replace the counsel of a licensed insurance advisor. Coverage varies from carrier to carrier and policy to policy. Claims are subject to the terms of your individual policy and are evaluated for coverage based on individual loss facts. Always seek the advice of an insurance professional when it comes to decisions and answers about your coverage.
